Circle {mobile} Tutorial

Well after a long search of trying to find the perfect mobile for baby Klein's nursery, I decided why spend anywhere from $40 to $100 on something I didn't love. Why not just make it? So I thought I would share the how to on this simple but perfect mobile for our little mans room.

Here is what you will need:

1. 10 pieces of cardstock {colors of your choice}
2.  Wooden Dowels {purchased them from hobby lobby}
3. Fishing Line
4. Sewing needle
5. Scissors
6. Hot glue gun
7. String or in my case gold wire

First Step: you want to do is to trace and cut out your circles, I did two different sizes of circles large and small and I used a stencil for the large circle and a small spray paint top for the smaller circles. If you are wanting all of the same color just cut out 54 small circles and 41 big circles, but I like the gradation of colors. I used dark blue, dark grey, light grey and white.
As you can see in the picture I cut out small light grey circles and decided no to use them.

Second Step: is to tie your wooden dowels together, I have an accent of gold in his room so I {I mean JD} spray painted the dowels gold to accent the other items in his room. I also had this gold wire that I used to tie them together but you could use string or the fishing line if you chose to.

Step Three: This step you want to lay out all your circles in the order you want them to cascade when hanging from the mobile. There is only one center chain and it will be the longest, then there will be 3 chains per arm. Since the two dowels meet in the center there will only be one center chain, just keep that in mind.

Step Four: This step to is to cut a piece of fishing line and attach it to the end of one of the dowels. {The lengths are a guessing game} I did trial and error, I made the fishing line longer and then would just cut off excess and then measure that length for the remanding dowels {this is per each length} Then you want to put a dab of hot glue where your knot of the fishing line is to secure it into place.

Note: The four shortest chains will go on the outside and the longest chain will go in the center, then work your way in from there.

Here is where each dab of glue and fishing line should approximately go.

Step Five: This is where you start to thread your circles onto the fishing line. Using the sewing needle, put a hole in then center of the circle and thread it through the fishing line. When I started at the top with the small circles I made the knot 2 finger lengths down, this will be where your first circle will rest. The rest of the circles I did 4 finger lengths a part going down. The further apart each circle the longer you mobile will be.

and here is the end result:

and lucky.. you guys get a little sneak peak of his room, but sorry I wont be posting final pictures until after he is born!!!

  1. For the 3rd color down in your tutorial, you have a 0 listed as the number of circles? Is that supposed to be a 10? Do you know the actual size of your circles? Trying to replicate!! :) Love the mobile!
